In the middle of Leonida sits a big lake with a sugar town on its shore. In the middle of Florida sits Lake Okeechobee, and its story is far darker than its sleepy fishing-town image.

The big water
Lake Okeechobee covers roughly 730 square miles, making it one of the largest freshwater lakes in the United States. Its name comes from Hitchiti words meaning "big water". Yet it is remarkably shallow, averaging only around nine feet deep.
The lake is the starting point of the Everglades. Historically, water spilled over its southern rim in wet seasons and flowed slowly south as the River of Grass, which is why GTA 6's Grassrivers and Ambrosia sit side by side.
The 1928 hurricane
In September 1928 a powerful hurricane pushed the lake's water over the low mud dikes on its southern shore. The flood killed around 2,500 people, most of them Black migrant farm workers in towns like Belle Glade. It remains one of the deadliest natural disasters in US history.
Zora Neale Hurston wrote about the storm in her 1937 novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, and it is still remembered in the lakeside communities today.
The wall around the lake
After the 1928 disaster, the federal government built the Herbert Hoover Dike, a grassy earthen wall that now circles the lake for about 143 miles. It is so tall that from most roads around the lake you can't see the water at all, just a long green embankment. That is why a big lake can feel strangely invisible when you drive through the sugar towns.
Sugar country
South of the lake lies the Everglades Agricultural Area, hundreds of thousands of acres of drained farmland, much of it planted with sugarcane. Clewiston, on the south-west shore, calls itself America's Sweetest Town and is home to one of the country's biggest sugar producers.
GTA 6's Allied Crystal refinery, which Rockstar says provides most of Ambrosia's jobs, is a clear riff on this company-town setup. The name also echoes real Florida sugar brands, the kind of wink Rockstar has always enjoyed.

Visiting Lake Okeechobee
The lake is one of the best-known largemouth bass fisheries in the country, and Clewiston is a base for fishing guides. The Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail runs along the top of the dike, the only place to get wide views over the water. Harvest season, from roughly October to April, is when the cane fields are burned and cut.
